Safely Unpacking Prints
My prints are shipped rolled inside a three inch cardboard tube with folded ends, then boxed. The paper I use is heavy and it holds a curve. Paper has a memory, the longer it is kept in a position, the longer it wants to stay in that position.
Ideally, the print is unrolled only once, at the frame shop.
Every time a print is handled, it risks being damaged.
If you decide to do it yourself, here’s how to do it without damaging the work.
Wash your hands or wear clean cotton gloves. Carefully bend the end open and flatten out the edge of the tube so it is flat and smooth. Reach your fingers inside and tighten the roll slightly by twisting your fingers so the paper rolls tighter against itself, then ease it out slowly as the roll becomes tighter and the pressure loosens. Once free, set the rolled print on a clean table and let it relax. If anything feels stuck or starts to catch, stop and adjust so the print rolls tighter and slides easily out.
